Abstract

End functionalized Polymer Grafted Nanoparticles (PGNs) form bonds when their coronas overlap. We study the local dynamic response of a system composed of three such interacting PGNs using oscillatory shear simulations based on a multicomponent model. In particular, we study the effect of number of grafted arms ( f = 600, 900, 1200), frequency of oscillation (ω = 10-2 , 10-4 , 10-6 ) and amplitude of oscillation ( = 5%, 10% and 15%) on evolution of number of bonds between PGNs and dynamic response of the PGN system. We observe that both net shear force and number of bonds between the PGNs depends on number of grafted arms, frequency and amplitude of oscillation. In particular, as grafting density increases, the magnitude of net shear force on moving particle and number of bonds between PGNs increases. Furthermore, breaking and formation of bonds between PGNs was pronounced at lower frequency and decreased with increase in frequency. We observe that oscillatory shear gives rise to nonlinearities and the nonlinear behavior becomes pronounced with increase in strain amplitude at all frequencies and grafting density values. We employ Chebyshev polynomials of first kind to analyze the observed nonlinearities.
