n this paper we show that the power allocation (PA) scheme in space and time that minimizes Chernoff bound on BER for transmitter and receiver selection in multi-input-multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels achieves exponential diversity order, irrespective of fading distribution, when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at both the receiver and the transmitter. This power allocation scheme uses a single RF front end and requires feedback of the best channel only. Simulation results are presented for MIMO Rayleigh fading channels wherein the presented scheme results in 10 dB gain (for 2 transmitter and 2 receiver) over optimal single-input-single-output (SISO) power allocation scheme for 4-QAM modulation at average bit error rate (BER) of 10^(-4). We also show that this scheme has lower peak-to-average-ration (PAPR) requirements.
