The design of aerospace vehicles involves the challenging task of designing thin panels that can withstand severe unsteady pressure and acoustic loads. One of the problems frequently faced by the panels is the acoustic fatigue and aeroelastic problem which was neglected during earlier days, but caused serious structural damages and reduced the service life of aircrafts significantly. A theoretical model of the response of a point constrained thin elastic plate to acoustic loading at grazing incidence in a rectangular duct is presented in this paper. The theoretical model includes the combined effect of the incident harmonic plane waves travelling in the duct and the scattered acoustic radiation generated by the vibrating plate. The fluid structure interaction of the plate has been studied through a modal expansion of the relevant eigenmodes, and the acoustic radiation induced by the plate has been computed using Doak’s theory. As an additional effort to reduce acoustic fatigue, the effect of mode localization technique is also studied in this paper. Mode localization is the confinement of vibration energy in a localized region in mechanical system. This modification reduces the plate response amplitude furthermore, which enhances the fatigue life of the aircraft panels.
