Near-surface microstructure and properties of titanium alloys can be varied by local alloying to produce a gradient in composition, phases and their distribution. Although laser cladding is often adopted for such surface alloying, here we present a relatively inexpensive and fast method to achieve the same using GMAW based weld deposition. Because of the extremely reactive nature of titanium, we have carried out the deposition processes under an inert (Ar) atmosphere enclosure fitted with a static weld torch and computer controlled X-Y stages for base plate movement. Initial depositions show mixing of nickel with a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and a commercial titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) substrates and formation of intermetallic compounds in the fusion zone. The microstructure and hardness in the alloyed zone change as a function of distance from the fusion interface, thereby creating a near-surface gradient material. We studied microstructure of Ti/Ni welds by using optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope. EDS analysis: formation of Ti2Ni and NiTi intermetallic compounds.
