Abstract

This paper proposes a packaged standalone LC-VCO based on self-biased switched capacitor array (SCA) to facilitate large frequency tuning-range. The proposed self-biased SCA achieves better supply noise rejection and is robust to QFN package parasitics when compared with other existing SCA topologies without compromising the quality-factor of the SCA in . A prototype self-biased SCA based LC-VCO designed and fabricated in UMC 65-nm CMOS process, oscillates from 1.54 GHz to 2.54 GHz having a tuning range (TR) of 40% achieving a PN of ≈ -96 dBc/Hz at 100 offset and hence an FoM of ≈ 174 dBc/Hz at 100 offset while consuming 10 of power from 2.5 supply, thereby making it ideal for applications requiring QFN packaged standalone VCOs.
