Abstract

Triclosan, (5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol), is a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that is used across the world in many personal care products, sport items, household products, health care products, etc. Triclosan has been designated as a “contaminant of emerging concern (CEC)” as its exposure is known to cause adverse health effects. Studies have reported triclosan induced adverse effects, however, mechanistic details of triclosan induced neurotoxicity are largely missing. In this thesis, triclosan induced neurotoxic effects with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of neurotoxicity have been investigated using zebrafish as a vertebrate animal model.
