Abstract

Grid fins are unconventional lifting and control surfaces consisting of an outer frame supporting an inner grid of intersecting small chord planar surfaces. Cascade fins are a new category of grid fins wherein, they do not have cross members unlike grid fins. In the present work, a sequence of simulation results obtained for cascade fins at different angles of attack is presented. The preliminary results indicate an increase in lift force at high angles of attack and reduction in flow separation in the inner members. The results are in agreement with the experimental data and indicate that cascading effect leads to a delay in flow separation.
