Abstract

With the tremendous growth of wireless digital communication has raised a spectrum shortage issue. Recent reports say that more than 70% of the available spectrum is not utilized eciently, such unused spectrums are called spectrum holes. For ecient utilization of spectrum, recent research introduced the concept of Cognitive Radio (CR). Cognitive radio is introduced as a novel explanation for the spectrum scarcity. The main function of CR is to sense the spectrum and then transmit their information without making any interference to the licensed user. There are several spectrum sensing algorithms proposed in the past literature to sense the presence of primary user's signal. This thesis elaborates the performance of energy detection based spectrum sensing over the various fading environments. The closed-form solution is derived for detection probability over Rayleigh and Nakagami fading channels. The cooperative spectrum sensing schemes were employed to enhance the sensing performance. The main asseveration of this thesis is the simulation of cooperative spectrum sensing over the various fading environments based on hard decision fusion rules such as OR, AND and Majority rule. The detection capabilities for both, the non-cooperative and cooperative sensing is examined and describes the simulation with the complementary Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC) curve and also the curve for detection probability with average SNR and a number of secondary users. From the simulation result, it is evident that the detection performance of cooperative spectrum sensing is considerably enhanced and verify well with the theoretical analysis.
