Abstract

Indolizidine skeleton is one of the most important structural subunits present in numerous biologically active molecules. The polyhydroxy indolizidines are potent biologically active natural products and exhibit specific glycosidase inhibitory activities. Since glycosidases are involved in a wide range of biological processes including those associated with a number of diseases and disorders, inhibitors of these enzymes constitute viable therapeutic targets for the treatment of various diseases and metabolic disorders such as cancer, diabetis, obesity, viral and fungal infection, and lysosomal storage disorders.In addition, indolizidine skeleton is present in anti-cancer agents such as lepadiformine, serratine, tylophorine and crispine A, as well as in immunosuppressive agent FR901483 and antibacterialagent trolline.
