Abstract

The objective of this work is to develop mathematical models for predicting the transient behaviour of the single degree of freeodm system i.e. spring mass damper system and infinte degree of freedom system i.e. contineous beam subjected to impacts using numerical methods such as Runge-Kutta, Newmark implicit scheme and Moreau’s midpopint methods. For simulating rigid point impacts on simply supported beam a new method is used called unit impulse response. This technique enables one to relate modal velocities before impact and after impact, without requiring the integration of the system of equations of motion during the impact. The result obtined using impulse based coefficient of restitution method with Runge-Kutta solver is also compared with result obtained from the Newmark implicit scheme. For simulating rigid point impacts on spring mass damper system, Moreau’s midpoint method is used in which the constrained problem is changed into an unconstrained one by utilizing a Signorini complementarity law including the impulse produced by the impact, the preimpact and post impact speed related through a coefficient of restitution.
