Abstract

Circular ducts are widely used in automobile applications for reduce noise. These duct system con- tains dierent chambers which are used to reduce the noise during their operation. The noise emitted depends on the structural properties of the duct as well as the acoustics properties of the medium. Current research work studies the noise emitted from the ducts. Ducts with bae, without bae and multiple numbers of bae are used for the analysis, to study the eect of the noise emitted. For analyzing the eect on noise emitted, the parameter like transmission loss was studied. Numerical and computational approaches were employed in the study. In the current research work, the acoustic performance of circular chamber muer with extended inlet/outlet and baes is investigated. two approaches are used to nd the transmission loss of the circular expansion chamber: (1) a one-dimensional (1-D) analytical solution for the concentric con- gurations; (2) a two-dimensional (2-D) computational solution for the concentric congurations by boundary element method. The transmission loss results from analytical approach is shown for spe- cic congurations. The computational approach is applied to determine the acoustic performance of axi-symmetrical expansion chambers with extended inlet/outlet and baes, which compares well with analytical solutions. Some of these eects are shown to modify the acoustic behavior drastically, suggesting potential means to improve the acoustic performance.
