Abstract

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a potential green substitute to diesel and liquefied petroleum gas . In this study, the effect of various reaction parameters on direct DME synthesis from Synthesis gas over metal (Cu, ZnO ) impregnated on γ - Al 2 O 3 support was explored. The direct synthesis was carried out in the fixed bed reactor with prepared catalyst at various temperatures (175 0 C - 275 0 C), weight hourly space velocity (1 hr - 1 - 11 hr - 1 ), and pressures (0 bar - 30 bar). Th e catalyst was prepared using incipient wet impregnation method. The catalyst comprises a Cu/ZnO/ Al 2 O 3 component for methanol formation and γ - Al 2 O 3 as acidic component for methanol dehydration to DME. The 15 % Cu/ZnO (by weight) supported over γ - Al 2 O 3 sho wed highest catalytic activity at 275 0 C, 30 bar and 9 hr - 1 , where CO conversion was 16.5%, DME yield was 16% and DME selectivity was about 96.7% .
