Abstract

Composite structures gain importance in engineering applications. Laminated composites consists of layers of different materials. Two classical failure mechanism occur in those structures: 1. Delamination and 2. Material failure of the layers. We study the dynamic fracture of laminated composites due to impact loading by the cracking particles method (CPM). The CPM is a meshless discrete crack method developed particularly for dynamic fracture with complex crack patterns. It is ideally suited to describe the material failure of the composite layers. Delamination is modelled by a simple nodal splitting procedure which is similar to the CPM. Several experimental examples with different fibre orientations of the composite layers are compared to our computational results.
